MAY 17 TO JUNE 19, 2019
OPENING RECEPTION WITH THE ARTIST: FRIDAY, MAY 17TH, FROM 6PM TO 8PM
SARDONYX / ZIP brings together two recent series of paintings by Donald Andrus. The artist proposes a deep exploration of stark dichotomy created by a singular combination of materials and techniques, including fresco slip, acrylics and gel pen on canvas.
Andrus’s works often depict an intense contrast between an aerial space emerging from a veil of spray painted area, and sharp intrusions of jet black slips on which are laid delicate reflecting patterns. The various ZIP paintings continues his concern of the juxtaposing of two apparently incompatible realities, which in fact do connect through the atmospheric particles on one hand and the organized particles on the other. The result of his unique processes is an elevated duality in imagery that compels the viewers to engage continuously in his visual abstraction.
